CE Methodology

Introducing a circular economy (CE)-based methodology for affordable housing construction consisting of two key approaches:

Selective Deconstruction

A step-by-step selective deconstruction process applied to two construction systems:

  • wood frame structure
  • concrete structure.

These examples demonstrate the feasibility and potential of selective deconstruction across different construction typologies and material conditions.

Design for Disassembly

A proactive approach that integrates future thinking into design and construction processes, detailed for three construction systems:

  • light wood frame
  • mass timber
  • precast concrete

Each system is evaluated through a comparative analysis of traditional construction methods and the DfD-informed alternatives. This comparison highlights the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing DfD within the current construction industry.

These approaches focus on practical strategies and methods for keeping materials in circulation by recovering existing building components and designing future buildings to be adaptable, reusable, and easy to disassemble.

Together, selective deconstruction and DfD provide a practical framework for integrating CE principles into affordable housing development. They demonstrate how housing can be designed, constructed, and adapted to support future disassembly, extend material lifespans, and reduce construction waste.
